Music

In St. Oliver’s, we take a keen interest in fostering the talents of each child. Music plays a very special place in our school.

The Junior classes are encouraged to engage with all the strands of the music curriculum and adequate opportunity is given to experience song singing, composing and listening and responding. Children from 3rd to 6th classes are given the opportunity to learn recorder and ukulele with our visiting music teacher.

The school choir gives children from 4th, 5th and 6th classes the opportunity to sing at major events in our school including Assemblies, Christmas concerts and First Holy Communion. In recent years we have also performed with the Navan Silver Band at their annual Christmas Concert, giving the children a fantastic chance to perform with a live band in front of an audience.

Since 2010, our departing 6th classes have hosted a musical every June. These shows are very much looked forward to by pupils and the wider school community. These have been a huge success and have involved whole school co-operation. Musicals performed by the children are based from such classics stories as Aladdin, Alice in Wonderland, Pirates of the Carribean and other well known stories and fairy tales. However, they usually carry a humorous and funny twist!

Certainly one of the highlights on the Ollies calendar is our annual X-Factor competition which takes place each December and gives children from 2nd to 6th class the opportunity to showcase their musical talents.

“What’s the Crime, Mr Wolf?” which was performed by our sixth class students.
